Lactation consultations are a unique opportunity for new mothers to receive breastfeeding support and services in a personal, one-on-one setting. While the decision to breastfeed is an admirable choice, it’s also a choice that comes with a few challenges. Lactation consultations are performed by health professionals trained and certified to provide breastfeeding support, education and guidance. Often they’re registered nurses with years of experience in pediatric care. With a lactation consultation, mothers gain confidence and a sense of empowerment over their own well-being and the health of their newborn. This added assurance quickly eases the postpartum period, and new mothers gain insight and the latest infant care information. Armed with knowledge and support, relaxed and confident mothers can enjoy this bonding experience with their new baby.
Breastfeeding Strategies with Lactation Consultations
Some of the basics that lactation consultants explain include your baby’s behavior and how to develop your intuition to identify and interpret their signals. Some of the other issues that are addressed during a lactation consultation include burping, soothing and sleep schedules of both you and your newborn. Consultants are also extremely knowledgeable and their assistance in resolving conflicting baby care and breastfeeding information is based on years of research and practice.
Other ways mothers can benefit from lactation consultations include how to transition their breastfeeding schedule around a mother’s return to work. Other topics covered include:
- Explaining the fine art of correct positioning and techniques that encourage latching.
- Identifying the feeding cues your baby gives, so that the hungry and full signals are addressed.
- Learning pumping techniques.
- Managing the frequency of feeds.
- Addressing the prevention and healing of sore nipples.
- Increasing milk production.
- Troubleshooting a low milk supply.
- Answering your questions about your diet during breastfeeding.
- Understanding the guidelines that ensure a well-fed infant.
One of the healthiest decisions you can make for your newborn is the decision to breastfeed. In fact the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Other organizations that endorse breastfeeding include the World Health Organization, the National Health Service, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In 2007, the State of California officially recognized August as Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Since then more and more mothers across the country are actively breastfeeding their newborns. According to the CDC’s 2012 Breastfeeding Report Card, nearly 88 percent of California mothers breastfed their infants the first six months of life.
